The title of Our School’s Got Talent Connacht Champions has gone to Roscommon after “Intervention”, featuring students from CBS/ Mercy College Roscommon, emerged as deserving winners in the Connacht final at a packed Royal Theatre Castlebar.
The competition, which is a fundraising project in aid of Special Olympics Connaught in association with Supermac’s, had attracted an entry of 355 acts and over the past three months heats and finals in the various counties produced 26 acts of the highest quality for the provincial final. The diversity of talent was a credit to the students and schools involved with Rock Bands, a Rap
per, Break Dancers, Irish Dancers, an Opera Singer, 24 piece Rock Orchestra, a 25 piece American bluegrass/country group and vocalists across a variety of genres all hoping to be crowned provincial champions.
The Roscommon student’s version of the Adele classic “Rolling in the Deep” made them the clear choice of the judging panel obtaining 116 points from a possible 120 on offer and they ran out worthy winners by 28 points when the final results were declared. They picked up a first prize of €1,500 as well as winning the opportunity to record their very first single which will be released in the New Year.
The race for the remaining places was a much more closely contested affair with just two points separating the next three acts. Sligo student AoibhinnMcDonagh produced a stunning version of Whitney Houston’s I will always Love You to clinch the runner’s up spot by a single point from 14 year old Louisburg student Matthew Cabot. Rock band “Nine Ideas” from Presentation College Headford finished fourth a single point further back.
The competition has helped raise valuable funds for Special Olympics Connaught as well as raising awareness of the work of the organisation.
